Mission Statement

Newburgh Interfaith Emergency Housing Incorporated exists to provide housing and services to address and prevent homelessness among individuals and families

History

The organization began in the late 1980’s and successfully transformed from a trail blazing grassroots organization to a private not for profit agency that identifies and responds to housing needs in the community. Newburgh Interfaith Emergency Housing Inc. is a joint venture of the Greater Newburgh Ministerial Association and the Christian Ministerial Fellowship of Newburgh & Vicinity, INC comprising over fifty area churches. The group envisioned and created a home like environment with on-site services where families could preserve their independence and feel safe and supported while coping with the experience of homelessness. NIEH renovated the former nurse’s residence of St Luke’s Cornwall-Hospital to create sixteen apartments, office space, a child care, and an activities center. They opened Project L.I.F.E., (Living Independently For Everyone) in 1992 as a New York State licensed Tier II shelter that provides transitional housing for homeless families who are Residents of Orange County.
